Battle of Bull Run- July 21, 1861 This was the first major battle of the civil war, and was a confederate victory. The Confederate soldiers outnumbered the Union around 8 for every 7 men.
The Emancipation Proclamation- January 1, 1863 The Emancipation Proclamation was signed by Abraham Lincoln in order to emancipate the 3.1 million slaves in the Confederate States. This outraged the Confederacy!
The Battle of Gettysburg- July 1-3, 1863 The Battle of Gettysburg was considered a turning point in the war. It was a victory for the North, but it was also one of the bloodiest battles in the war, with almost 8,000 deaths.
Confederate Surrender- April 9, 1865 General Lee's troops were surrounded By General Grant, and on April 7th, he called Lee to surrender. On April 9th they met at the Appomattox Courthouse to discuss the terms.
