The agriculture in NM was very difficult to keep up. So, the govenment did something called the Homestead Act. The Homestead act was passed in 1862 and seemed pretty reasonable. Basically, new settlers, who came here were given the option to have 160 acres of land and had to take car and better, which was really tough because that area was a dessert
When the railroad was develpoed, it brought a LOT of tourists to the state. The people from the East were wanting to come to the west for different reasons. For tourism, to stay there, or to find precious metals and more.

People looked for gold and silver in NM scine 1540, when Francisco Coronado traveled West. But, they only got a little gold or silver after a lot of mining. The first gold strike in NM didn't happen until 1830, in the Ortiz Mountains.

Harvey houses were hotels and resturaunts for tourists who came to NM. These were really popular. These were fair priced and was named after Fred Harvey, a buisnessman from engaland.
