- EXPOSITION: The narrator is introduced in the story. He is trying to prove to the readers that he is not crazy, even though no one is claiming that he is. THE EXPOSITION:
- CONFLICT: The narrator's neighbor is an old man with an eye that bothers him very much since it looks deformed.
- RISING ACTION: The narrator becomes so bothered by the old man's eye that he plots to get rid of it- which means he will have to get rid of the old man.
- I am going to kill him
- CLIMAX:The narrator suffocates the old man with his mattress one night and causes him to wake up screaming. The narrator forces the mattress onto him until his heart stops beating and buries his body parts under the floor.
- FALLING ACTION: Some neighbors hear the scream and call the police, who show up to the old man's apartment. The narrator covers the murder up by saying the old man was out of town, and that it was him screaming.
- RESOLUTION: The narrator hears a ticking sound, which he thinks is the sound of the old man's heart. He gets so overwhelmed and confesses to killing the old man.
