After Abraham Lincoln was assassinated, Andrew Jackson became president and continued carrying out Lincoln's reconstruction plan. The Thirteenth Amendment freed all the slaves in the US and all of the United States territories.
In 1868, this amendment made all the former slaves citizens of the United States. It gave citizenship to everyone born in the US, and also gave everyone equal right.
