For the half of a century no mortal has disturbed them. In pace requiescat
We are below the river's bed. The drops of moisture trickle among the bones.
I had borne as best as I could; but when he ventured upon insult, I vowed revenge.
The name Fortunato resembles being fortunate with your luck, but what is ironic about his name is the fact that later on Fortunato is going to be, murdered, therefore being quite unlucky or fortunate
This is verbal irony because fortunato was killed in the most disturbing and worst way. He was murdered in a way that he will suffer before he will die and that fact that he says rest in peace in pretty ironic.
I must not only punish, but punish with impunity
By taking Fortunato down to the catacombs we can tell that that id=s the pace where he will be wishing to kill him and because no one ever goes down in the catacombs they will not be able to hear his screams.
It is this I have created
You are not of the Masons, prove it!
This saying foreshadows the anger that he has towards Fortunato and the revenge that he will soon get is going to be when he kills Fortunato.
This lets us know that he wants to punish him for his insults and that not only is he going to punish him but he is going to do it with impunity.
The trowel that he has created is foreshadowing the fact that that is what he will be using to trap Fortunato in the catacomb.
