  • The President, George Washington, sent troops to the Ohio Valley because he believed the Northwest Territory was critical to the security and growth of the new nation. 
  • These troops got defeated twice. 
  • After the second defeat, Washington ordered another group of soldiers west. Anthony Wayne was in charge. 
  • The Native Americans joined in the British-held fort in Miami looking for British help, but the British refused to get into war with the United States. 
  • This is the fight between the American settlers and the Native Americans. Wayne led the American Settlers to victory. 
  • The American victory caused The Native Americans to surrender.  
  • This American victory made the Native Americans surrender much of what Ohio and Indiana today.  
  • (It was called, "Fallen Timbers" because many trees had been knocked down on the area in a recent storm.)
