Rainsford and his crewmates are on a ship bound for a vacation resort in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He is having a good time on the ship, but then most of the people on the vessel go off to sleep
Rainsford drops his pipe over the edge of the railing on the ship, and reaches out to get it. However, he falls into the dark waters and the ship leaves him to fare for himself.
He climbs up onto an island and follows a trail to lead him to a Chateau in the woods. When he knocked on the door, a bodyguard pointed a gun at him, but the owner let him in soon after.
The owner's name was Zaroff. he made Rainsford feel at home until he introduced how he likes to hunt. The next day, he challenged Rainsford to a hunt, but Rainsford didn't lose, however he did kill one of Zaroff's dogs and his bodyguard in his escape.
Zaroff was so upset that he had lost so much in so little time, and that he finally lost to his prey. He sat and ate his dinner alone that night, and he wondered why Rainsford had escaped from him. He didn't see any reason for him to do that.
When Zaroff went up to his bedroom to turn in for the night, he saw Rainsford standing there. Rainsford wanted revenge at Zaroff, and he was willing to do anything to get it.
