Pocahontas was an American Indian girl. She helped the early English settlers survive. She was born around 1595. She was born in a place we now call Virginia. Her real name was Matoako. When she got married she had a child named Thomas . Her father was a chief named Powhatan, he ruled about 30 tribes. She died in march of 1617.
In spring of 1607 the English settlers came to Virginia and built a town named Jamestown. Their leader was Captain John Smith. One day, some Powhatan warriors captured Smith and took him to Powhatan. Powhatan ordered his men to make Smith lie on the ground, One of the warriors went to hit Smith with a club. Suddenly, Pocahontas put her head over Smith. Powhatan told his warriors not to kill Smith.
Soon the settlers and indians became allies, the indians gave them food in exchange for weapons. But the settlers grew hungry. The more hungrier they got the more food they demanded, and the more food they demanded the more weapons the indians want. And soon the indians refused to help the settlers. One day Smith got hurt and the new leader found a way to get Powhatan to give him food. He tricked Pocahontas into coming on his boat. Then he would not let her leave. She was a prisoner in jamestown for 1 year and in that time she learned to speak and dress english. In 1614 she married an english man named John Rolfe. Soon peace was upon them again.
