Storyboard Text

  • Negative: if there is a negative exponent, you have to flip it and make it into a fraction or if its already a fraction then flip the fraction or make it a whole number. Example:                 Zero: if the exponent is zero then the answer is always 1. Example:
  • Multiplication : if the bases are equal then just add the exponents, if the bases aren't equal then you multiply the bases and add the exponents. Example:
  • Power to Power: if you have an exponent outside the parenthesis, you will distribute it to the other exponents inside the parenthesis. If needed simplify. Example:
  • Product to Power: first you will distribute the exponent to the other exponents inside the parenthesis.  But you have to think about the numbers as a multiplication problem. The number and variable are separate and you have to distribute the exponent to both. Example:
  • Division: if you have a common base then you will just subtract the exponents. If not then you will simplify it for example 8/2 would turn into 4/1. The variable with the exponent will always go to the top of the fraction and you will still subtract the exponents. Example:
  • Quotient to Power: when you have an exponent outside of the parenthesis then you will distribute it to every exponent inside the parenthesis, then simplify.  You will normally keep it in a fraction, and if at least one exponent is negative then you will need to flip the fraction and make the exponents positive. Example:
