We can't do anything about these people. There is no way to cure their addiction.
hmmm...
He was brought here this morning by a young man. He found him laying in the middle of the road.
Scene 3: Responsibility
I can't let more families go through the same experience...I must do something about this!
Ever since Anna was a little girl, she had a passion for helping others. She graduated high school with a full scholarship for post-secondary studies. She went on to graduate medical school, making tons of friends along the way. Currently, she is in her second year of residency. Anna was a studious, happy, and loving little girl growing up. But her childhood was unlike other kids. Her dad was a drug addict, who was sentenced to 20 years in jail after being involved in bank robbery because he had no money to satisfy his addiction. Her mom worked as a housekeeper to bring income home.
Scene 4: Legal support
Order! Order!
This morning, Anna saw another patient in the emergency room who was drug overdosed. She has been noticing that overdosage cases are on the rise for the last few months, after the new federal election. The government has been reducing the flow of funds towards the rehabilitation programs, that are aimed to help drug addicts with their addiction. But everyone around her, including the senior doctors, seems to have lost hope for these people. It is startling how the government has chosen to leave these people without any assistance.
Scene 5: Beam of hope
That day, Anna sat in her office thinking about how she can make a difference. She didn't get to say goodbye to her father who died in prison. She did not want any other kid to see their parents in the same situation. After many hours of thinking, she decided she was going to talk to her senior at the hospital and organize a provincial conference where all medical practitioners and researchers come together and form an alliance to forward the request, in order for the government to resume the funding.
Scene 6: Reunion
Frontier High Schoolclass of 2022
The post-conference results were exceptional. The medical board had the chance to further their request and speak in the legislature. After a few weeks, Anna was given the opportunity to speak on behalf of the entire team in the supreme court. Anna confidently spoke about the positive impact the rehab programs had on the crime rates in the previous years. But, after the new government decided to redirect that funding towards other projects, the crime rates and the number of overdosage cases have steadily peaked again. After her talk, the judge decided that the new government be required to resume funding the rehabilitation programs as not doing so will mean that they are depriving these people of their basic rights to healthcare and assistance.
Your honour, as a medical practitioner...
Anna now works at the rehabilitation program that she and her team were able to reopen. She feels a sense of purpose and service to her community. At the rehab centre, they provide addicts with a clean and safe environment where they can go and get the right amount of drugs and satisfy their addiction. Many times, Anna sits with one of the people and they share their stories with her. She feels reconnected to her childhood self after speaking to one of them. One thing she has realized is that these people are as worthy as anyone else in our society. They are not inherently flawed people. They are victims of addiction and want to find the right path in life.
During her time working in the rehab centre, Anna met a man named Umar. After a few visits, one day Anna sat down next to his and had a conversation. Umar told her about his family, his wife Fatima and his teenage daughter Sofia. He tells her that he wants to be with his family again and needs her help to come out of addiction. Umar now has a job and is able to attend his daughter's graduation. That day, Anna felt true happiness for the first time in many years.
