Once upon a time, there lived a young woman and her daughter. They led a peaceful life in a quiet village, where they lived off of the land and dreamt of becoming more.
Until one day, when the daughter was slaughtered by a gang of passing thieves that had attacked their village.
Able to only watch as her child was killed, the mother escaped and then fled for several miles through a wild landscape as the men hunted her.
She listened to the sounds of the men approaching and peered at the river, wondering if drowning would be a mercy compared to what fate she might find at the hands of these thugs.
As darkness fell all around her, the young mother found herself trapped by a snaking river. She fell to her knees and began to sob, unable to go on without any family to live for.
Suddenly, a shining goddess rose out of the river. Startled, the woman rose to her feet and quickly dried her tears with a hand.
The goddess explained that she had felt the mortal's suffering as she approached the river and she had decided to show herself and help, as one so kind and pure should never have to go through such pain.
Shocked that she had attracted the attention of an immortal being, the woman wondered aloud how the goddess could help.
She explained that she could transform the woman into a creature that would not only allow her to escape her daughter's murderers, but also guarantee a lifelong family.
She held out her hand to the woman, offering a new life of freedom. The girl took it and was transformed into the first goose, free to fly away.
