  • Linton is brought to his father for the first time by Nelly.  He shows absolutely no desire to be living with him.  He is unsatisfied with the meal presented to him.  Heathcliff begins to express his initial disliking for his son.
  • Chapter 22: Part 1
  • Young Cathy is heartbroken by her cousin's departure.  Her father, Edgar, promises that he will return.  Him and Nelly both know that due to the current circumstances, this will be very unlikely.
  • Chapter 22: Part 2
  • Years later, on a walk with Nelly, Cathy runs into Heathcliff.  He invites her back to his house to see Linton.  He reveals his mischievous plan to Nelly regarding the two children marrying each other.  Cathy and Linton hit it off and begin to pursue a romantic relationship, communicating via letters against Nelly and Edgar's wishes.
  • While on another walk, Cathy confides in Nelly about her sadness and fears.  Shortly after, Heathcliff approaches them on horseback.  He expresses anger at Cathy because her lack of writing has broken his son's heart.  He blames her for his pain, and requests that she goes to see him at Wuthering Heights while he is out of town.
  • That night, Cathy cries silently to herself in Nelly's presence.  She feels horrible about causing Linton pain.  Nelly tries to tell her that it may be all a lie, but Cathy insists she cannot be sure until she checks herself.  The nurse does not want the families to interact ever again.  She hopes that what Heathcliff has said is not true.
