PERSIAN WARS This war was between the Greeks and the Persians. The Greeks were made up of two towns. The Athenians and the Spartans. This battle started because of an argument between the two countries, for land.
BATTLE OF MARATHON This battle was between the Persians and the Greeks. Although the Persians had many more men, the Greeks won with a surprise attack. After the battle was won, Pheidippides ran 25 miles to Athens from Marathon to proclaim the Greek victory.

BATTLE OF THERMOPYLAE This battle was also between the Persians and the Greeks. The Greeks were led by the Spartans. The Greeks had to hold off the Persians at a narrow pass. However once a Greek traitor told the Persians of another way around, many Greeks retreated. The 300 Spartans that stayed all died.

BATTLE OF SALAMIS This battle was fought at sea after Athens was evacuated. The Athenians had a powerful navy, and new ships called Triremes. With these ships the Greeks punched holes into the Persian ships and sunk 1/3 of the whole Persian fleet.

BATTLE OF PLATAEA While the Athens were fighting the Persians at sea, the Spartans were on the plain of Plataea defeating the rest of the Persian army. After the Greek victory Xerxes retreated.

EFFECTS OF THE WAR The Greek victory from the war created a sense of unity. Athens had control of what was left of Greece through the leadership of the Delian League. The Delian League is an agreement that the remaining Greek city-states would help each other.
