  • The Conch
  • I got the conch.
  • The Signal Fire
  • The Lord of the Flies
  • The conch is the symbol of authority, civilization, and lawand order. The conch is used to call assemblies and only theperson holding the conch could speak at the meetings. The destruction of the conch symbolizes thedestruction of what little civilization the boys possessed.
  • The Scar
  • The signal fire symbolizes the boys’ connection to civilization. The fire,initially, is important in the novel. As the boys grow more savage, the fire becomes lessimportant to them. It also symbolizes hope and survival as the boys maintaining the fire is a sign that they want to be rescued and return to society. Gradually the fire is very important to them not just for rescue but also for cooking food, etc.
  • The Parachutist
  • The Lord of the Flies is the bloody, severed sow’s head that Jack impales on a stake in the forest glade as an offering to the beast which symbolizes thedevil. The Lord of the Flies becomes both a physical manifestation of the beast, a symbol of the power of evil, and a kind of Satan figure who evokes the beast within each human being.
  • Painted Face
  • I will hunt the pig!
  • The scar left by the plane crash, refers to the area of the island that is damaged when the plane carrying the boys crashes into it. Symbolically, the scar represents the encroachment of civilization into the previously natural and undisturbed island. It symbolizes the fact that man, and his savage nature, destroys paradise merely by entering it.
  •  A dead man floats onto the islandand becomes lodged in rocks and trees. The dead parachutist symbolizes the adult world andits inability to maintain peace and civilization. The boys spot the dead parachutist and mistake the dead body for the "beast" which symbolizes fear, terror and the inherent evil each individual possesses on the island.
  • When Jack paints his face, it represents his change from civilized to savagery. He becomes a part of the island after he paints his face, and his actions are like those of a savage animal as he hunts. It symbolically represents his transformation from a civilized English boy to a bloodthirsty savage. The painted face acts as a mask which hides his true looks and personality.
