The next day Douglass noticed that Mrs. Auld was acting different, because she started to make Douglass do more work around the house. She made him get more firewood, do the dishes, and he did more errands if she needed more supplies. He noticed he wasn't being treated like her son anymore, he was starting to be treated like a slave.
Douglass noticed very soon with every passing day Mrs Auld was making him do more and more. And it didn’t stop there. she didn't just start to treat him like a slave she started to treat one of the other boys like a slave. She made him do errands with Douglass and made him clean up the house with him. Soon he started to see Mrs Auld as a slaveholder, not the nice kind hearted lady that she was when he first arrived. And she did just start to give orders she had to do better than her husband who was a slaveholder.
Douglass didn’t know it but he was witnessing the effect of slavery corrupting a slaveholder. Because she got a little bit of power over Douglass she changed over night and she just got worse. So bad that she was even worse than her husband who was a slaveholder. Whenever he gave an order she had to give another. When a slave got punished by her husband, than she had to punish the slave again. Her husband tried to make her stop but she just got worse. He soon noticed that his wife was corrupted by slavery. There was no fixing the damage that was all ready done. Douglass learn that slavery doesn’t just corrupt slaveholders but it can corrupt the nicest person. All a person needs is a little bit power over another human being. And the lamb like softness can turn a persons personality into a lion like fierceness .
