Sinking of the Lusitania and the Zimmerman Telegram
Central powers and the Allied powers
The killing of Archduke Ferdinand was the spark that started World War 1. This is significant in the beginning of World War 1 because Austria- Hungary got angry with Serbia for killing their Archduke and declared war. Serbia was friends with Russia, Russia was friends with France and Great Britain and Great Britain was friends with Belgium; Austria-Hungary was friends with Germany and the Ottoman Empire and that is how World War 1 began.
New Technology/ Trench Warfare
The Sinking of the Lusitania wasn't a direct start in U.S involvement in WW1, but it did anger Americans when Germany sank a U.S passenger ship and killed 128 Americans. The Zimmerman Telegram was the direct start in U.S involvement in WW1 because Germany sent Mexico a proposal that if they join the central powers then Mexico will get some of American territory back. Americans got very angry with this and soon after decided to go to war for the Allies.
In this picture, the person in red is the allied power and the person in blue is the central power. Serbia was friends with Russia when Austria-Hungary declared war, Russia was friends with France and Great Britain and Great Britain was friends with Belgium, this became the Allied Powers. Austria-Hungary was friends with Germany and the Ottoman Empire and they became the central powers.
The Treaty of Paris
There were lots of new technology used in World War 1 such as: tanks, machine guns, mustard gas, bombs and trenches. Trench warfare was terrible. People in trench warfare would sit and stand in mud and water all day, not knowing when the fighting would begin. Also, people who were in trench warfare would end up having depression or post dramatic stress.
The armistice occurred on November 11, the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918, this happened because the Germans didn't have anything left to fight with, so they called an armistice to talk about peace. The French and British wanted to impose a harsh settlement, but Wilson's Fourteen Points had international cooperation, so France and Britain made Germany pull back its troops on the Western Front and cancel Treaty of Brest-Litovsk. Also, Kaiser, the German monarch was forced to step down.
Wilsons fourteen points was a peace plan to help prevent future wars. The League of Nations is also used to prevent future wars, but Lodge objects this because it would restrict the right of the U.S to act independently. The Central Powers lose the war, but they only punish Germany. Germany was forced to pay a huge fine for their actions.
