- Jack and Ralph found that they didn't have matches to make a fire after the boys gathered leaves and sticks to make a fire.
- Ralph then takes Piggy's glasses from him, without his consent, and attempts to make a fire with them.
- The boys then start a fire but realize they need more sticks to keep the fire going.
- The boys argue about how they won't be able to keep the fire going, and the laws begin to break, but Piggy suggests allowing him to speak with the conch, but the boys tell him to be quiet.
- Jack volunteers himself and his hunters to find the sticks to keep the fire going.
- Piggy believes the boys don't need a fire and tells the boys this, but they continuously ignore him.
