Storyboard Text

  • Norman Bowker holds on to Kiowa's boot in the waste field. Bowker notices that Kiowa is dead.
  • Oh No! He's Gone!
  • The smell of the waste is so bad that Bowker lets go of Kiowa, and watches his body sink in the waste and his boot slip away. Bowker is stuck in the waste with bullets flying and explosions going off.
  • Smells...So...Bad! It's in my mouth and nose now!
  • Bowker is alone with no weapon. The waste is all over his face and body, and all he wants is a bath.
  • Bowker is circling around the lake with his father and thinks about Kiowa sinking in the waste.
  • Bowker tells his father how he could have won the Silver Star
  • "I was cool. If things had gone right, if it hadn't been for that smell, I could've won the Silver Star".
  • Bowker sees the story as a good war story but feels that the details of story is something nobody wants to hear.
  • "A good war story, but it was not a war for war stories, nor for talk of valor, and nobody in town wanted to know about the terrible stink".
