  • The fruits have spoiled on the voyage. Now we will lose profits.
  • At least the tobacco is still preserved. Let's focus on cultivating more tobacco to make more money.

  • The early settlers focused mainly on tobacco cultivation because when cultivated fruits where exported to Europe, many of them would get spoiled on the journey. This loss would cause a decrease in profit. When realized that tobacco would not spoil, they decided to make it the main cultivation.

  • An increase the the demand for sweeteners to make teas,, cakes and biscuits as their only source was the honey from bees.

  • The Dutch had provided resources for the production of sugar and bought many of the planters' produce to support them and provide a ready market for sugar.

  • Increased wealth in the islands of the West Indies as a there was a large increase in sugar exports to European countries.
