The early settlers focused mainly on tobacco cultivation because when cultivated fruits where exported to Europe, many of them would get spoiled on the journey. This loss would cause a decrease in profit. When realized that tobacco would not spoil, they decided to make it the main cultivation.

An increase the the demand for sweeteners to make teas,, cakes and biscuits as their only source was the honey from bees.
