They live in South Carolina and it is the year 1918. The narrator, Doodle, Mom, Dad, and Aunt Nicey lived in a rural area on a farm.
The narrators younger brother, Doodle, was born disabled. He wasn't able to walk or do normal things that young kids could do. The narrator was embarrassed and made fun of his younger brother.
A Scarlet Ibis fell out of a tree and died during dinner one night. Doodle was traumatized and wanted to bury it. The family was weirded out and told him not to touch it.
There is a hurricane when the narrator and Doodle decided to go outside. They were going back home and the older brother ran faster because he knew Doodle couldn't catch up. Doodle ended up dying under a red bush when he and the older brother got separated.
The older brother realizes Doodle isn't coming and goes to check on him. He finds Doodle dead under a red bush.
The narrator then realizes Doodle is dead. He starts to weep and protect him from the storm.
