Due to the rocky soil of Plymouth the colonist were unable to grow crops. So instead colonist of Plymouth made money by fishing, whaling, and timber.
Many separatist some known as Pilgrims left England and the Church of England to find religious freedom. People who did not agree to the strict religion in England faced religious persecution.

The Mayflower Compact was the first governing document of Plymouth Colony signed by men on board the Mayflower. The Mayflower Compact was created to maintain order and create a civil society. The document created laws for the good of the Plymouth colony.

When the Pilgrims first arrived to Plymouth on November 1620 during the winter it was very difficult for them and all of their plans for building houses were delayed due to the harsh winter and the rocky soil.
In both Plymouth and Jamestown the colonist were looking for some type of freedom. In Jamestown the colonist were looking for ways to pay of their debts and be free so they were sent to Jamestown to pay off their debts. While in Plymouth the were looking for a safe place to practice their religion without being persecuted so they left England for a better home were they were free to practice their religion. Although geographically they were very different. Jamestown was built on a swamp with fertile soil and mosquitoes while Plymouth was built on rocky soil. Jamestown settlers made most of their money by planting and selling tobacco and cash crops. While Plymouth settlers made their money from fishing, whaling, and timber.
