  • This is Marie Curie's Lab. She has been fascinated by rays ever since it was dicovered.
  • She was in her lab one day examining a material called pitchblende. She expected to see only a few rays but she found alot. She realized she must have dicoverd a new element in pitchblende.
  • Marie and her husband spent many hours in the science lab investigating pitchblende and the new element. They eventually figured out that there were two new elements in pitchblende.
  • I just did some experiments. You know Marie Curie, the one who discoverd radiolgy?
  • Radiology can help cure cancer!!
  • Yes, what did you find?
  •  Marie named one of the elements polonium after her homeland Poland. She named the other radium, because it gave off such strong rays. The Curies came up with the term "radioactivity" to describe elements that emitted strong rays.
  • In 1903, she and her husband won a Noble Peace prize for their work in radiation. She was the first woman to recive a Noble Peace Prize.
  • Doctors later discoverd that radiology can help cure cancer.
