In the exposition of the short story "Three Skeleton Key" written by George G. Toudouze, the Narrator works on the island called Three Skeleton Key. The island got its name since three men a couple years ago tried escaping from Cayenne on a small, stolen canoe. Later they died of hunger and thirst. So, the Narrator works with two other men in a lighthouse by the names of Le Gleo and Itchoua. Late one night, the three men were working in the lighthouse, and they saw a ship sailing towards the island, but it wasn't stopping, it was headed straight towards the island. "Are they drunk, are they insane?" exclaimed Itchoua. Then they realize that there is no crew on board and no one is controlling the ship. Also, there are a bunch of rats on the ship that are huge. A couple hours later, the ship crashes in the reef by the island and sinks in the sea. They are relieved to see the rats gone, but then they start swimming back up to the surface and towards that island. The rats swim up to the shore of the island and the three men run into the lighthouse. The rats start climbing up the lighthouse and try biting through the walls. The three men are stuck inside the lighthouse for days.
Oh My Gosh, is that a ship coming right at us, can't they see us?
What's wrong with the crew? Are they drunk or insane? Can't they see us?!!
Uh Oh, Rats! There's rats! Nevermind, they'll drown in the water when the boat sinks.
Oh no! She's getting closer. She is going to crash! But why the devil is she abandoned?
We better go run into the lighthouse! NOW!
Phew. The ship is sinking, at least we don't have to worry about it anymore.
But look, the rats! They're swimming to shore!
The Narrator, Itchoua, and Le Gleo see a ship coming towards their island. They start freaking out and get scared that the ship is going to crash into the island.
Come on guys HURRY!
At this point, there was no crew in the ship, it was abandoned. Before, the ship crashed into the island, it got swayed back and forth by the wind. Then they realize they're also sea rats on board that are the size of cats.
We'll be stuck here forever!
What are we going to do? We're trapped!
At this time, the ship has crashed in the reefs of the island. The three men are relieved, but then they see a bunch of flesh eating rats are swimming onto the island since they smell the three men.
The three men run into the lighthouse as quick as they can. As they are running, they see that there are thousands of rats. They get even more scared and worried that they will get eaten alive.
Once, Le Gleo, Itchoua, and the Narrator run inside the house, they hide in there and hope that the rats will soon leave the lighthouse. But now, the rats have climbed up the 100ft lighthouse and start trying to bite their way through the walls.
