  • Memory Moment
  • Why did you have to die Simon?!
  • Simon
  • "Before the war...young woman named Mary.. I loved her... her parents told her to stop seeing me." (131) Anchor Answer: This memory might be important because we know that Simon had someone to love. Also, we know that he loved Mary before the war.
  • Contrast and Contradiction
  • "It was a cool night in November, 1938... the night of the broken glass, a dead man on the glass." (5-10) Anchor Question: This memory might be important because Michael has still had that memory in his mind since he was 8 years old. He has been traumatized by that moment.
  • Contrast and Contradiction
  • "Simon...surely there had been some other way." (253) Anchor Question: This memory is important because it tells us how sad Michael is from losing Simon, since he had been killed by a gunshot. Also, we know he died so he didn't have to go through so much pain.
  • Contrast and Contradiction
  • "Sir, yes sir!...Heil Hitler!" (218) Anchor Question: Michael might be acting this way because he really wants to be on the science Nazi team. The reason being so he can find out what Fritz's and the other boys' plans are. Therefore, he acts different to be on the team.
  • "Pick that up at once!" yelled Major Melcher. "No!" replied Fritz. Fritz might be acting this way because he wants to be tough now and not be soft and get beaten up easily. Also, since Fritz is on the SRD by now, he can be tough and mean to other people.
  • "The butler glanced to make sure no one was watching... and poured himself a cup of water." (14) The butler might be acting this way because he is thirsty, and doesn't want to drink water in front of the Nazis. So, he decides to go in the room that Michael was hiding in (the butler not knowing he was in there) and pour himself a glass of water.
