Storyboard Text

  • I just got back from signing up to be a voyageur. I had to do this because my father can't work because he chopped off his finger, and we need money to feed us. I'm sad because I have to leave my family behind.
  • Today I started my journey. Today we had to go through our very first rapids, luckily we made it through. I kind of get along with my crew mates. They call me Grandpa because I am slow and small. We stopped at St. Anne Church to make an offering. My muscles ache very bad now. Then we had to go back to paddling, I would prefer to go back to school.
  • I had to carry my first set of portage today!  The other voyageurs tricked me! I ended up carrying 200 pounds! We decided not to go through the rapids because 19 people have died because of the rapids. My hands hurt so badly. The are bleeding and blistering because of paddling. It is starting to get cold, that means we are getting to the northern part of Minnesota.
  • La Londe is gone. He slipped and fell. We made a cross out of his broken paddles. We started crossing Lake Superior and there was a big storm, so we went to an island. We had to stay there for three days. One night Bellegarde, Beliot, and La Petite got in a fight but everyone is okay. The day before we started paddling again everyone started taking baths. When we got to our next fort that everyone was prettying up for, well I was surprised there were just wigwams.
  • When we arrived at the fort I started walking around and the camp is split up into two parts, one side for the people who headed back before autumn; the other for the people who wintered in company outposts. Then I met Charbonneau's friend, Mukwa. He has a really pretty younger daughter, Kennewah. I picked berries with her!  I ate ate Mukwa's wigwam. We ate dog! Surprisingly  it was really delicious!
  •  I am heading back to Lachine! Next year I am definitely signing up again to see Kennewah and to just voyage again. On my last portage I saw some voyageurs put extra heavy stuff in a pack and were going to give it to a young boy. I was going to warn him but I  remember when my crew did it ti me and I earned some of their respect, so I decided to wish him luck. I finally made it back to Lachine!  When I got to my house Pepper my dog ran up to me. I missed Pepper so much! Then I surprised my father. We gave each other a big hug and then we went inside to see the rest of my family.
