The neighbors of Maple Street notice a big roar and something zooming over their heads! The power goes out, so Steve and Charlie decide to go downtown to see if anything went wrong. But, Tommy doesn't let them! He says that the big thing that passed over them was an alien spaceship, and that anyone could be the alien. Goodman's car start up by itself and everyone turns on him.
It was suspicious of Tommy knowing what it was, but no one had any other ideas. Charlie had killed an innocent man, just because he was in the dark. They were tearing up each other. And they didn't even know it!
Aliens are watching over the neighbors of Maple Street and how they were driving each other insane. They were just like the rest they said. All they did was turn off the power, all the non-sense and arguments were just the neighbors.
Don't jump to conclusions is the best theme for this story because all the accusations had no real evidence. My first evidence is that when Goodman's car turned on by itself, everyone thought he was the alien because only his car would work. They say him try, and not succeed, at turning on his car, but they still went for it. The neighbors started shouting at him and demanding an explanation of which he did not have, since his car turned on completely by itself. My second piece of evidence is that Charlie killed an innocent man, just because he wasn't with the group. Charlie grabbed the gun and immediatley shot Pete Van Horn without even thinking about it. Not even one thought crossed his mind before the gun went off, killing a man. After they realized it was Pete, coming back from checking out another town, they started blaming Charlie of being an alien. And lastly, Tommy was being blamed because he was the only one who knew it was aliens. Even though, it does seem suspicious that he had the idea of it being aliens, and it turned out it was. He was still just a teenager, who read sci-fi novels and comics about aliens. Tommy was smart enough to guess it was aliens, and that was truly the only reason he got blamed for being the alien. No one truly had evidence of someone being an alien, all they had were just words and conveniences that tore them apart.
