Storyboard Text

  • I really want one of those candy bars, but it's $1.89.
  • I want one too! We should probably get one for Sammi, but I don't know if we have enough money.
  • We have $5, and we can figure out if we have enough money using multiplication!
  • [] |||||||| ::::.
  • Think of it like this: the squares are ones, the lines are tenths, and the dots are hundredths.
  • [] |||||||| ::::.
  • [] ||||||||::::.
  • In total, we have 27 hundredths, 24 tenths, and 3 ones. We can regroup--27 hundredths is also 2 tenths and 7 hundredths, 24 tenths is also 2 ones and 4 tenths. In total, we have 5 ones, 6 tenths, and 7 hundredths. So, our total cost for the 3 candy bars would be $5.67.
  • So, we don't have enough money for 3 candy bars. We can still buy 2 candy bars and split them between the 3 of us!
