  • No Please! I couldnt afforf to pay that much.
  • In mid 1780's Massachusetts faces economic problems. This state had high taxes and expected people to pay and average of $200 per year, which the farmers barely even made. Many Massachusetts farmers fell into deep debt.
  • I am Daniel Shays, I gathered you all here today so we could end farmers going to jail for debt.
  • Anyone who could not afford to repay their debts would have their property auctioned off. If their land wasn't auctioned off for enough money, the debtor would be sent to jail.
  • My men and I will put up a fight because farmers debt is wrong.
  • His land was not auctioned off for enough money to repay his debt, so he was sent to jail. Massachusetts jails were packed with deptors. Farmers asked for debt relief but they refused.
  • Thank you for all of your help, now my fellow farmers and I are free and the government has realized their mistakes.
  • One of the leaders was Daniel Shays, a Revolutionary War veteran who commanded a group of about 1,500 men.
  • In January 1787, Shaw and his group marched on a federal arsenal. There arsenal had over 900 men from the militia surrounding it, who quickly defeated shays army.
  • Even though the Militia put down Shays Rebellion, the uprising came to be known. The farmers won the sympathy of the people and Americas leaders realized that an armed up rise of farmers meant danger.
