The Haitian Revolution has often been described as the largest most successful slave rebellion in not only the Caribbean but all of the Western hemisphere. Not only did the Slave end slavery but French control over the country.
Enslaved Africans had laws made for them called code noir (code black). They were bought, sold, abused in different ways, ill-treated, overworked and hardly ate. And because of that, they wanted freedom so badly.
In May 1790s Toussaint a military leader and former slave gained control of several areas. In January 1801, Toussaint conquered Santo Domiingo (Dominican Republic) and in May made himself Governor-general for life.
Charles Leclerc, with experienced force for St. Dominguez with several other exiled mulatto officers fought against Toussaint.
Toussaint struggles for several months against Leclerc forces before agreeing to an armistice in May 1802, however, the French broke the agreement and imprisoned him in France.
