Laila had to wait until she finished school to marry anyone. She is helplessly in love with Tariq, but cannot marry him. I think this is hard for Laila because she just wants to be with Tariq, but she knows that it is important to Babi that she has a good education.
Tariq leaves Afghanistan because the war is becoming too dangerous. This is especially hard on Laila because he is leaving and she will not be able to go with him. She knows Mammy won't leave, but she wants to be with Tariq more than anything in the world.
Tariq asks Laila to marry him before he leaves Afghanistan. This is really hard for Laila because she has always loved him, and now that he is leaving, she culd just go with him. The only thing holding her back is Babi and Mammy because they want to stay in Kabul.
