In the exposition of Aaron's gift, the setting takes place in New York. As known, New York is a major city/state, so Aaron goes skating here instead of someplace else. As he is skating, he finds a broken pidgin.
Aaron takes Pidge home and attempts to fix him. Since they're fairly new to the area, Aaron's mom let's him keep Pidge temporarily. Aaron's grandmother lives with them ad she is an animal (particularly birds) enthusiast! She is happy to see Pidge!
As Aaron is walking with Pidge, he is approached by a boy gang. Aaron had dreamed of being in this gang and the boys asked him for Pidge and if he gave it to them Aaron could be in the gang. His mom told him to stay away from the boys. Also grandma's 60th birthday is coming up so he has to decide between being cool and his grandma's birthday.
In the conflict of this story, Aaron indeed takes Pidge to the boys club. The boys threaten to throw Pidge in a fire! Aaron manages to save Pidge from the disaster and for once, Pidge fly's away happily!
