Mercutio and Benvolio see Tybalt walking toward them. Tybalt asks where Romeo is so he can fight him but Mercutio thinks that Romeo is afraid to fight him so he tries to get Tybalt to fight him instead.

Mercutio and Tybalt start to fight then Romeo shows up and tries to stop them but, he gets in the middle and blocks Mercutios view and Tybalt stabs Mercutio. Then Tybalt runs away.

Romeo feels the death of his friend is his fault and goes to find Tybalt when he does Romeo wants to fight him, Romeo then kills Tybalt in the street. After the prince has found out about this and bans Romeo from Verona.
Mercutio thinks Romeo is afraid to fight Tybalt but the audience knows that Romeo has just married Juliet the cousin of Tybalt and they are basically family and does not want to fight him.
Romeo has been in love all this time with Rosaline but then he sees Juliet and doesn't even talk to her and forgets about Rosaline and now is in love with Juliet. it's like after seeing Juliet he doesn't care about his "true love" anymore.
