  • I am sorry there isn't anything we can do to help you, there are new laws. 
  • They are going to take all of my family back to the south, but we are free. 
  • I work in the fields all day without pay, I'm a slave. 
  • Both sides got what they wanted. California entered the nation as a free state, The slave trade--but not slavery--would end in the nation's capital. Lots of things were done, and some of them were for each side of the battle. 
  • I don't care what you are. You can't prove anything. 
  • You are under arrest, 
  • But I'm a free man
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin was written by Harriet Beecher. It informed people of the evils of slavery
  • Antislavery and Pro-slavery groups rushed their supporters to Kansas. By early 1856 Kansas had two opposing groups, the population was angry. 
  • Just two days after Buchanan became president, the supreme court issued a historic ruling about slavery. News of the decision threw the country back into crisis. 
  • In 1858 John Brown tried to start an uprising. On the night of October 16, 1859, John Brown's raid began. He tried to get slaves to join him, but instead local white southerners attacked him.
