Santervas de Campos, Castile (Spain) 1474 New Baby Just Born!
Hi! I'm Juan Ponce De Leon!
Juan Ponce De Leon was born in 1474 in Satervas de Campos, Castille Spain. His mother was Leonor de Figueroa and his father, Pedro Ponce de León, Fourth Lord of Villagarcí. At an early age, Juan became a squire for Don Pedro Nunez de Guzman.
Nunez taught De Leon how to fight. He even sometimes took part in battles for King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella. Juan was part of the army that defeated the Moors in 1492 to make the Iberian Peninsula ruled by Spain.
When he was done with war, Juan joined Christopher Columbus on his second voyage to the New World. Juan ended up as a military leader on the Island of Hispaniola.
In Puerto Rico, he discovered gold and fertile land. In 1508, he returned and established the first Spanish settlement in Puerto Rico. The king made Ponce de Leon the first governor of Puerto Rico.
On April 2, 1513, Ponce de Leon and his crew discovered land. He called the land "La Florida."
After Puerto Rico, Ponce de Leon returned to Spain to tell the king about his discovery. He then went back to Florida in 1521 with the hopes of establishing a colony. However, not long after landing in Florida, the colonists were attacked by local natives. Ponce de Leon got hit by a poisoned arrow. He died a few days later, after retreating to Havana, Cuba.
