Storyboard Text

  • And every night about midnight I turned the latch of his door and opened it—oh, so gently! And then, when I had made an opening sufficient for my head, I put in a dark lantern" (Poe 3).
  • "And this I did for seven long nights—every night just at midnight—but I found the eye always closed; and so it was impossible to do the work; for it was not the old man who vexed me, but his Evil Eye"(Poe 3)
  • "I kept quite still and said nothing. For a whole hour I did not move a muscle, and in the meantime I did not hear him lie down. He was still sitting up in the bed, listening just as I have done, night after night, hearkening to the death watches in the wall"
  • (Poe 6)
  • Every night around the same time, the narrator would go in the old man's house.Opening the door wide enough for him to see as the old man slept. This he did for eight nights.
  • "The old man's hour had come! With a loud yell, I threw open the lantern and leaped into the room. He shrieked once—once only. In an instant I dragged him to the floor"(Poe 11).
  • The narrator would be extra careful not to wake up the old man.Once he was fully in the room he'd undo the lantern.Every night he'd find the old man's eye closed which made it harder to do the work.
  • "There came a knocking at the street door. I went down to open it with a light heart,—for what had I now to fear? There entered three men, who introduced themselves, with perfect suavity, as officers of the police"(Poe 14)
  • "We are officers of the police"
  • On the eighth night, the narrator was more cautious than ever. However the old man awoke with a startle. The old man sat up in his bed trying not to think about the noise he had heard.
  • "I gasped for breath—and yet the officers heard it not. I talked more quickly—more vehemently; but the noise steadily increased. I arose and argued about trifles, in a high key and with violent gesticulations "(Poe 17)
  • “Villains!” I shrieked, “dissemble no more! I admit the deed!— tear up the planks!—here, here!—it is the beating of his hideous heart!”
  • That same night, the narrator decided to end the old man's life.He dragged the old man to the floor where he suffocated him with the bed.The narrator waited a couple of minutes to make sure that he was dead. And placed the old man's body under the planks of wood.
  • At four o' clock there came a knocking at the door.Three men who introduced themselves a officers of the police. The narrator welcomed in in the officers and made up a cover story for the old man's disappearance.
  • But soon the narrator grew in fear as he started to hear a sound. The sound he believed to be of the old man's beating heart. He couldn't take it any more, he shouted at the officers as he admitted to the crime.
