  • In 1828 President John Quincy Adams signed into law a high tariff to help american manufacturing. The tariff greatly harmed the southerners economy. They called it the tariff of abdomination.
  • Force Bill
  • In July 14th 1832, President Jackson signed a law that made the issue somewhat better but this did not satisfy southerners.
  • South Carolina's actions
  • Politicans in South Carolina began organizing under Calhoun's leadership. In November 24, 1832 the Ordinance of Nullification was made and ultimately refusing to folor, or obey the law.
  • As a resuilt of South Carolina's open nulification of the law. Jackson issued the Force Bill. This allowed Jackson to use military forces against South Carolina.
  • To avoid any further issues South Carolina agreed to a compromise on the new tariff. They repealed their nulification and the force bill as a symbol of its principles.
