Ordinance of Nullification
In 1828 President John Quincy Adams signed into law a high tariff to help american manufacturing. The tariff greatly harmed the southerners economy. They called it the tariff of abdomination.
In July 14th 1832, President Jackson signed a law that made the issue somewhat better but this did not satisfy southerners.
South Carolina's actions
Politicans in South Carolina began organizing under Calhoun's leadership. In November 24, 1832 the Ordinance of Nullification was made and ultimately refusing to folor, or obey the law.
As a resuilt of South Carolina's open nulification of the law. Jackson issued the Force Bill. This allowed Jackson to use military forces against South Carolina.
To avoid any further issues South Carolina agreed to a compromise on the new tariff. They repealed their nulification and the force bill as a symbol of its principles.
