I'm Pastor Ted! Eventually, I'll get kicked out of my church for hypocrisy & repression of my true feelings.
Dan Harris is a young ABC War Correspondent. His job is very stressful because he is constantly competing for air-time.
"It's becoming friendly with the is-ness of this moment."
Once back home, Harris experiences severe anxiety so he goes to a psychiatrist who diagnoses him with depression.
Harris is then assigned to be a Religious Correspondent for the station. While he enjoys learning about how and what people believe, his stress and depression is still present.
Harris starts researching self-help gurus (for work and personal reasons), but ultimately finds their teachings unrealistic and unfulfilling.
Harris talks to Professor Epstein about Buddhism, and is instantly hooked. Buddhism and mindfulness offer Harris a realistic way to have better control over his thoughts and reactions.
Per Epstein's suggestion, Harris goes to a famous Buddhist meditation retreat. It is very trying, but eventually Harris has a breakthrough and feels a lot better. After the retreat, Harris meditates at home and work to keep from getting too stressed/ upset.
