  • Charlie learns he will revert back to his original intelligence levels. Algernon, who also had the operation reverted first probably due to that the operation took effect much more quickly therefore he'll revert faster as well.
  • Person vs Society
  • Charlie tries to figure out why his brain is deteriorating and if he can stop it . He does not become emotional about it and pushes forward, and learns that it is very similar to progressive amnesia. It soon becomes clear that the reversal is inevitable and the deterioration may even kill him, as it did to Algernon
  • Person vs Society
  • Eventually the deterioration is complete and Charlie returns to around his original IQ levels. then after that he soon runs out of money and goes to get his old job back, but the people treat him differently than they used to, so he decides to move away so he can just live somewhere where no one knows about him or the operation.
  • Person vs Society
  • People make fun of Charlie when he makes a mistake by saying that he "pulled a Charlie Gordon". But Charlie doesn't understand that they are not laughing with him, but laughing at him and doesn't realize how cruel they are being to him. Only after the operation does he realize what they mean when they say it.
  • Charlie is in a restaurant and a mentally disabled boy who works there drops a plate and everyone laughs at him and the boy doesn't understand why. Then Charlie yells at all the people for being so cruel to a person because they aren't as smart and storms out of the restaurant.
  • Charlie gets voted out of a job by a petition for him to be fired. The people at the factory fear the change that has occurred in Charlie's operation and since they don't understand it and so they fear it a many do with change.
