  • A Holiday Hymn
  • By: Olivia Schnoebelen
  • Debby Downer owns her own bakery called, Debby's Shop. Debby hates this time of year, Christmas time. She has to make so many Christmas cakes and girls selling girl-scout cookies always stop by and Debby always refuses them. Her partner Mary loved Christmas season, however she died 7 years ago. Mary came back to see Debby in her bakery as a Ghost. Mary told Debby three other ghosts will come to haunt her and her bakery will close.
  • I must. But why do spirits walk the earth, and why do they come to me?
  • The weight and length of the strong coil you bear yourself?
  • The Ghost of Christmas Past visits Debby at one o'clock.  The Ghost brings her to her school and watches young her, all alone on Christmas day. She sees Christmas with her family, her sister Fan, who has passed. The Ghost then takes Debby to a more recent Christmas, where Paul is breaking off their engagement. After seeing that site, Debby begs the Ghost to take her home.
  • I told you these were shadows of the things that have been
  • You're right. I will not gainsay it, Spirit. God forbid!
  • The Ghost of Christmas Present visits Debby and takes her to a hustling city. She sees people being in the Christmas spirit. After they stay there for awhile, the Ghost takes her to the  Smith's household. The mother is cooking up a small feast with what they have. The dad comes walking in his sick child, tiny Tom. The family is more than happy with the little feast they have. Debby realizes that Tom will not be there next Christmas due to his illness. The Ghost then takes her to a ship to see Christmas there. Debby joins in and plays all the games the sailors were playing, the Ghost then takes her back home.
  • It might be a claw, for the flesh there is upon it.
  • You seek to close these places on the Seventh Day.
  • The last Ghost, the Ghost of Christmas Future visits Debby. The Ghost takes her to a Stock Exchange where the workers are visiting about a death of a rich lady. They then go visit a poor pawn shop where there are strange people selling items of a dead lady. Debby then sees the household of the Smith's and see them sadden of the death of tiny Tom. The last spot the Ghost takes her is to a graveyard, Debby then finds out that the people talking about the dead lady, was her. She promises the Ghost to have Christmas spirit and to have joy so she can get out of the graveyard.
  • I see, I see. The case of this unhappy man might be my own. My life tends that way now.
  • Debby wakes up that morning after the three Ghosts and spirit of Mary. She goes outside and just starts saying "Merry Christmas" to everyone. She goes to buy a turkey and pays someone to deliver it to the Smith's house. She runs into a lady who she treated poorly in the past and apologizes. She goes to a Christmas party where the guests are shocked to see her so happy and in the spirit. The next day she goes to work early waiting for Bob Smith. He comes to work minutes late, Debby acts mad but isn't. She gives Bob a pay raise to help his family. She kept her word and spirit up. She becomes a second mother to tiny Tom and lives an inspiring live as Debby Downer.
  • I shall love it as long as I live!
  • It shall not be repeated. I was making rather merry yesterday, sir.
