  • In 1821 Mexico won Independence , and controlled the land known as Texas. Wishing to increase settlement in Texas they sent Stephan to bring settlers from America. Stephan brought 300 American families over to Mexico. Everything was fine until Americans decided they didn't want to follow Mexico's rules.

  • Mexico finally issued a agree closing its borders from any further immigration. Austin and Sam Houston tried to make peace with the Mexican leaders but his effort failed. Americans and Tejanos planned to break away from Mexico. Then the conflict grew violent and Mexican General Antonio took an army to Texas to punish the rebels.

  • We would like for the United States to annex Texas.
  • Once the army got there they found the Texans barricaded in a mission building called the Alamo. They only had about 180 soldiers to take on the Mexican army of several thousand. For 13 days the Alamo didn't let the army in until they cannon fire smashed the Alamo's walls. The Mexican army killed many of the defenders, only a few women, children, and servants survived.
  • Texas Becomes A State
  • Four days after the Alamo was defeated they declared independence from Mexico. They then established the Republic of Texas. Texans then launched a surprise attack to the Santa Anna force, killing more than 600 soldiers and capturing about 700 more. Santa Anna signed a treaty that recognized the independence of Texas.
  • In 1836 Texans elected Sam Houston as their president. Houston sent a delegation to Washington, D.C., to ask the United States to annex Texas. Andrew Jackson refused their request, he did not want to add another slave state to the United States.
  • Many Texans wanted to join the United States, but President Martin did not want to inflame the slavery issue or risk was with Mexico. In 1844 Manifest Destiny became a popular idea so after Polk won , congress passed a resolution to annex Texas.
