  • Introducing Toussaint
  • I'm Toussaint Louverture, I was the leader of Saint Domingue's (Haiti's) revolution and helped free the slaves back in the late 1700s- early 1800s.
  • Toussaint was always against slavery, he would go back and forth with the French depending on when the reestablished slavery other the years. He himself was a slave and he was granted his freedom by his owner. He always fought for the freedom of slaves in Haiti. Sadly, he died in a French jail when slavery was officially abolished in Haiti once and for all.
  • His Letter to the French
  • "Could men who have once enjoyed the benefits of liberty look on calmly while it is taken from them! They bore their chains when they knew no condition of life better than that of slavery..."
  • Toussaint Louverture sent this letter to the French Directory in 1797 expressing how he and his military would fight to keep slavery abolished. He states "I declare to you that this would be to attempt the impossible: We have known how to confront danger to our liberty, and we will know how to confront death to preserve it."
  • Fighting European Enemies
  • "Toussaint... [organized] and army against the British, who [were] nervous about abolition spreading their colony of Jamaica."
  • OMG it's Toussaint Louverture, he's going to kill all of our men. His army uses so many good tactics including guerilla fighting and shoulder-to-shoulder fighting. We're all gonna die!
  • How European Enemies Tried to Keep in Control
  • Toussaint has defeated me and my army, I must flee back to Britain. We can't let any one know how strong their army is or else others will revolt against us.
  • Establishing the Constitution
  • "All men are born, live and die free and French." "[Agriculture] cannot suffer the least disruption in the works of its cultivation"
  • "The Constitution nominates citizen Toussaint-Louverture, Chief General of the army of Saint-Domingue and... he is entrusted the direction thereof for the remainder of his glorious life."
  • How Toussaint Should be Remebered
  • Toussaint should be remembered as a national hero to Saint Domingue, modern day Haiti. He grew the country's economy, was straight forward with his people, and freed the slaves. He never stopped fighting for his people, and he ultimately sacrificed himself for his country.
  • "...Toussaint, by his superior knowledge of the character of his race, his humanity, generosity, and courage, had gained the confidence of all whom he had under his command... By his genius and surpassing activity, Toussaint levied fresh forces, raised the reputation of the army, and drove the English and Spanish from the island."
  • After Toussaint's armies beat the European armies, they were afraid that the news of the revolution against slavery would spread to their other colonies. They tried and succeeded in ceasing the communication with the other colonies, for example the United States.
