The narrator and the old man live in the same house, and the narrator at first says he likes him. However, the narrator can not stand the old man's creepy eye. The eye really bothers the narrator.
Now the narrator and old man are getting ready to retire for the night, and the narrator cannot stop looking at that vulture eye. The narrator is obsessed with it in a bad way. The narrator thinks if he goes to bed, the vulture eye will just go away.
This is the eighth night of the narrator trying to get rid of the old man and his vulture eye. He shines a flashlight into the room, because he wanted to see that crazy eye open. Finally, the eye opened, and it kept calling to him. The old man heard the door creak, and couldn't see him because of the glare of the light.
The narrator decided it was time to get rid of the vulture eye, and he did violently. He chose to use the old man's mattress and suffocate him. He waited there until the eye was no longer there. The narrator was now happy that eye wasn't looking at him anymore. He disposed of the old man's body buy burying the parts in the floor board.
Someone in the building heard a terrifying shriek, and this person called the police. They showed up, but at first the narrator told the police that the scream was from him. He said he had a horrible nightmare that made him scream in his sleep.
Sitting with the police, the narrator kept hearing what he was hearing before the cops came. It was a noise so distinct, and it sounded similar to a heartbeat. It went thump thump, thump thump. He couldn't take it any longer, and he finally confessed to police. The body parts were buried underneath the floor boards.
