This depicts Gene reflecting on what had happened at this exact spot fifteen years ago. Gene is just realizing the abundant amount of fear in which he used to live with. Gene then flashes back to when it all began. (Knowles 14).
In chapter 2, Finny practically saves Gene's life. As gene is beginning to fall off the tree, Finny catches him just in time. Without Finny there, Gene could have died. Gene does not show one ounce of gratitude. (Knowles 31).
In chapter 3, Gene and Finny go to the beach despite the fact it's against school rules. Finny seems to have a great time; however Gene doesn't seem as enthusiastic. Gene even doesn't say Finny's his best friend back when Finny mentions it to him. (Knowles 47).
In chapter 4, Finny falls off the tree after Gene jolts the tree. As Finny looses balance it appears that Gene doesn't do as much as he could have to try and save Finny. Finny hits the bank awkwardly and very hard, (Knowles 60).
Chapter 5 is mainly focused around the injuries Finny sustained from the accident. This specific scene shows us Finny going to his actual home, and leaving the school. (Knowles 67).
In this scene Gene is talking to Finny over a long distance call. Gene is nervous about Finny coming back to Devon, but acts completely fine. (Knowles 83).
