  • When Suleyman I, the last of the great Ottoman Emperors, died a series of weak sultans followed. This lead to the end of the Ottoman Empire, and many European countries fought over the lands.
  • After the Ottoman Empire fell, the Russians decided they were going to claim the lands. In 1853 the Crimean war began between the Russians and the Ottomans
  • In the beginning of the 19th century the British took over India using indirect control. The Sepoy, the Indian soldiers, were okay with it. However, a rumor spread around that the bullet casings were greased with cow and pig fat. This started the Sepoy Rebellion.
  • "The Great Game" was a war between Great Britian and Russia, over control of India. Russia wanted India so they could extent their borders and Britain wanted to defend India because it was their most valuable colony. 
  • David Livingstone and Henry Stanley were both hired to go deep into Africa and promote Christianity. Stanley adventured the path of the Congo river which interested King Leopold II. Leopold then hired Stanley to help himobtain the land in the congo. 
  • The Berlin Conference was held because the conflict between the Europeans fighting for Africa were so great. Only 14 European countries went to the conference. They agreed that if any European country was to claim any part of Africa they would have to notify other nations first.
