After hearing about her fight with her mother, her father punishes Jeanette by whipping her once she gets home from school that day, telling her she has to respect her parents. After this, Jeanette decides that she has to get out of Welch as soon as possible.
Jeannette goes out and buys a piggy bank she saw at G.C Murphy. Once she got home, she put the $75 she'd earned working at the jewellery store. This was the start of her escape fund.
One day, Lori and Jeanette meet two filmmakers from New York,
Jeannette begins saving money through her job at the jewelry store, along with babysitting, tutoring, and doing other kid's homework. Lori attempts to win an art scholarship to help fund her schooling.
