You crashed a party? That's crazy! (Westerfeld 28)
Well, I was up in the middle of town, at a party. (Westerfeld 28)
Shay! Come on, it's just for fun. (Westerfeld 44)
Do you need to get some picture into your head so you can imagine it instead of my face? (Westerfeld 44)
Who are we meeting, anyways?(Westerfeld 71)
His name's David. (Westerfeld 71)
While escaping New Pretty Town, Tally hides in the bushes and meets Shay, who was also trying to sneak into the town to pull her own trick.
I'm not coming back, forever. (Westerfeld 93)
And I'm not going. (Westerfeld 93)
Tally and Shay quickly become friends, and they begin talking about their upcoming operation to turn them "pretty". Tally is ecstatic that it's coming soon, but Shay isn't so sure about what she wants to do.
You can die ugly for all I care. (Westerfeld 110)
One night, after Shay thinks Tally is ready, she takes her hover-boarding to the Rusty Ruins at night She tries to summon a boy named David who she says lives in a different city, but he never shows up.
It IS you! I knew it was! (Westerfeld 187)
Six days before their shared 16th birthday, also the day of their operation, Shay sneaks into Tally's room to tell her she's leaving for a place called the Smoke, where David and some of her friends now live. She gives Tally directions in case she ever wants to follow.
On the day of her operation, Tally gets pulled into the Special Circumstances- the governing group of the city- instead. She meets a woman named Dr. Cable, who tells Tally that she's not allowed to become Pretty unless she tells them where Shay and the Smoke are. Tally refuses to do so for a few days, but eventually gives in.
The Specials send Tally with a bag of supplies and a tracker in the shape of a locket that will only activate if she opens it. Using Shay's directions, she makes it to the point where all new Smokies go 4 days later, and Shay, David, and another boy named Croy meet her there the next morning and get rid of any trackers they found on her board.
