Holden has been very depressed because his brother Allie passed away three years ago from Leukemia. So Holden spends a few days in New York trying to make himself feel a little better but ends up isolating himself more than usual.
On Saturday's the school serves steak because the parents come to the next day and when they ask their children they want to impress them by having them answer that they were fed steak.

Holden meets three girls in the lavender room at the bar and dances with them, but Holden thinks they are morons. Holden tells one of the girls that he had just seen Gary Cooper to get rid of her because he was annoyed.
