  • France was having a financial crisis so the king called a meeting. The estates voted by order to decide what would be done. The third estate was always outvoted and never heard. This is a step towards democracy because the people are finding out that they are being treated unfairly.
  • The March On Versailles
  • Move to Paris!
  • Give us bread!
  • After locking themselves in a tennis court, the third estate pledged to not disband until they had created the constitution of 1791 and renamed themselves the National Assembly. This is a step towards democracy because the third estate has has created a constitution.

  • On July 14, 1789 the third estate stormed a prison called the Bastille. This was considered the start of the French revolution. This is a step towards democracy because the people are taking action against the government.

  • The women marched to the king´s palace and demanded bread and that he move to Paris so that he could be closer to his people. So to avoid further conflict the king promised to move. This is a step towards democracy because the people are realizing that they have power.
  • Robespierre was in charge of the republic and killed many people with the guillotine for speaking of the king or anything else about the way life used to be. Robespierre is soon killed by the people. This is not a step towards democracy.
  • Napoleon became a military leader when he was very young and exceeded to crown himself the emperor of France. The people liked him because he embraced democratic ideas and gave them a better quality of life. One of his greatest reforms was the Napoleonic code that ensured the basic rights of his citizens. This is a step towards democracy.
