  • Here we are introduced to the narrator of this story. He says to you that he could not be a madman, for he could tell you the story of how he got here completely calm.
  • The narrator tells us that he loved the old man, that he didn't despise him in any way. Though, there was something about this old man, he had a "vulture" eye. This eye would drive the narrator to kill the old man.
  • For seven nights the narrator stalked his neighbor from afar, waiting for the right moment to strike. But for seven nights he had to wait, and wait, and wait. He carried a lantern with him as well, just to catch the neighbor's open eye.
  • On the eighth night however, the old man was startled because the narrator made a slight sound. The man turned in his bed, seemingly startled by what he had just heard. He called out, but our narrator stayed still.

  • At four o'clock the narrator had hidden the body, but there was a knock at the door. He told himself that he had nothing to fear, and he opened the door. There were two bobbies at the door, but he greeted them and lied. He showed the two around the house before sitting down and chatting. He was then arrested.
