John is at the Grimpen mire.
After seeing the animal that tried to attack Sir Henry, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson discover that it is a dog that is part bloodhound and part Mastiff. Both of these dogs are huge in size.
Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson rush back to Merripit House and find Beryl Stapleton bound and gagged.
After they untied her, she makes sure that Sir Henry is okay. She tells them that they can find her husband John Stapleton in the Grimpen mire. This is where he kept the dog.
Since the fog is too thick to find Stapleton, Holmes and Watson go to Baskerville Hall with Sir Henry.
